Banff National Park is located in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, 68-112 miles west of Calgary, encompasses 2,564 sq miles of mountain terrain, with many glaciers and ice fields, dense coniferous forest, and alpine landscape.
The park was established in 1885 as Rocky Mountains Park. The Canadian Pacific Railway was instrumental in Banff’s early years, building Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise. The main commercial center of the park is the town of Banff.
